Cancer Incidence & Projection
Cancer continues to pose a major public health burden globally and within the European Union. In 2022, over 2.7 million new cancer cases were estimated across EU member states, and by 2021 cancer had become the second leading cause of death, accounting for approximately 1.15 million deaths.
Global incidence is projected to nearly double by 2050 compared to 2022, according to the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer. While this growth is uneven across regions, Europe and North America remain among the largest documented contributors in absolute case numbers and healthcare expenditure.

From a genomics perspective, these trends point to sustained, long-term demand rather than episodic adoption. While sequencing is not always required for initial diagnosis, it is increasingly embedded in routine oncology workflows, supporting therapy selection, molecular stratification, and resistance monitoring as treatment paradigms become more targeted and driven by biomarkers.
